Check out my Cool Google Friend Connect Bar

Check out my Cool Google Friend Connect Bar

friendconnect-logoI love having this widget at the very bottom… kind of like the Facebook bar. Very easy to use and doesn’t clutter up my page.

If you’re not familiar with Google Friend Connect and it’s many benefits, it’s a great way to make your site more interactive. Friends can recommend you to their friends and comment directly in the bar or even add video. Way cool, and a great way to keep up with your favorite sites. Stop by Google Friend Connect for more great features and benefits.

So how do you get this cool friend connect thingy on your site?

  1. Sign up at: http://www.google.com/friendconnect/home/intro
  2. Click Set up New Site
  3. Sign in to your Google Account
  4. Choose either Blogger Format or Standard Format

Now for the tricky part…

  • You need to download two files that will need to be uploaded to your server.. (Note: Don’t be stupid like a certain nice geek girl with a whip that uploaded these files into her WP Plugins file… That’s not where it belongs .. {Note to Vince..that’s not what I meant by “that’s not where it belongs”}). You need to upload the files into your /public_html/ Folder.
  • Next you’ll need to let Google test to insure the files have been correctly uploaded

Once everything is uploaded, it’s just a matter of choosing a widget and placing the html code in your header and where you want the widget to show up. Since I wanted the bar on the bottom, I placed the code in my footer within the body tags.

Now you’re ready to go out and bug all your friends to sign up. You can start by hitting the Re-Tweet button below so your friends will know what the heck this widget does.

    Karen,

Excellent points. I’ve been using GFC for quite a while and the hover bar is great because people are getting used to seeing it. At least on the upper tier most professional sites (which makes you look good for having it).
